What We Do
At Pride and Prophecy, we specialize in intergroup variation analysis of renowned fantasy, specifically high fantasy, universes including Malazan Book of the Fallen, Wheel of Time, The Elder Scrolls, The Lord of the Rings, A Song of Ice and Fire, Diablo, Forgotten Realms (Dungeons & Dragons), World of Warcraft, and The Black Company. We'll continue to add more universes in the future. Pride and Prophecy aims to immerse you in new universes from the familiar vantage points of the ones you already love.
As a point of clarity, Pride and Prophecy defines the greater genre of fantasy into four subcategories, with our focus currently limited to one of these four: high fantasy, low fantasy, hard sci-fi, and soft sci-fi.
High Fantasy involves stories set entirely in independent universes, separate from Earth and its history. These worlds develop their own internal logics, histories, and cosmologies, often defined by unique forms of magic and fantastical creatures. Examples include The Lord of the Rings, The Stormlight Archive, and Malazan Book of the Fallen.
Low Fantasy, in contrast, takes place in settings that remain intrinsically connected to Earth, even as they introduce magical or supernatural elements. The fantastical components interact with familiar environments, grounding these stories in a world that feels like our own. Works like Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia demonstrate how Low Fantasy weaves magic into the everyday fabric of life.
Hard Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) is defined by its adherence to plausible science and technology, often speculating on advancements rooted in our understanding of physics, biology, and engineering. While controversial, Pride and Prophecy considers super hero/comic books Hard Sci-Fi, as their narratives frequently rely on speculative but scientifically framed technologies, such as Tony Stark’s arc reactor or the genetic mutations central to the X-Men. This is not always the case, but, this assumption is made for consistency.
Soft Sci-Fi, on the other hand, prioritizes storytelling and imagination over strict scientific plausibility. It often includes fantastical elements and settings that stretch beyond the constraints of known science. Star Wars and Dune, with their mythological tone and focus on adventure in galaxies far, far away, exemplify Soft Sci-Fi. While they include advanced technologies like lightsabers and hyperspace travel, these elements function more as narrative devices than as rigorous explorations of scientific concepts.
Our Ranking System
We rate characters on a scale of 1-10 across five different attributes, comparing them to fantasy characters across all universes. This culminates in a unique power ranking, and we also provide an alignment chart for easy access to all characters we rank. We also have a relative ranking system that crowd sources fantasy ratings from fans like you. Make sure to answer the queries in our sidebar to contribute to what we hope will become the gold standard of fantasy power-levels.
The Arena
The ratings in the ranking system are used for our proprietary simulation program, where these fantasy characters compete in regular matchups against each other, in what we call The Arena. The results are shared on our X (Twitter) and Bluesky accounts. Each year, we host conference tournaments and a March Madness-style grand championship to determine the arena grand champion across all high fantasy universes.
The Bookmaker
The Bookmaker allows Arena spectators to engage in simulated betting, wagering virtual currency (gold) on matches. It's designed to enhance the entertainment experience and does not involve real money or any financial risk. Features and updates will be rolled out over time. Current work is focusing on automating match outcomes, rather than the current model of periodic manual updates. Progress can be tracked on Github.
Diversions
Beyond comparative lore analysis, Pride and Prophecy develops browser-based diversions that deepen engagement with each universe. These projects range from fully-released tools to experimental simulations, all crafted in the same spirit of rigorous world-building that guides the site’s research.
