Longshadow is a feared and reviled sorcerer in The Black Company universe. One of the most complex antagonists in the series, he first appears in Shadow Games and plays a pivotal role throughout The Books of the South and into Bleak Seasons and She Is the Darkness. Longshadow, gaunt and twitchy, is the creator of the Shadowmasters and one of the chief enemies of the Black Company.
Longshadow, the Shadowmaster |
Longshadow’s obsession with shadow magic—both his greatest power and his deepest curse—drives him to the edges of madness and into a relentless pursuit of control over the world. Through alliances and betrayals, he attempts to conquer vast lands and expand his influence.
Who Is Longshadow?
Longshadow is a tall, skeletal figure, garbed in a black robe embroidered with silver and gold protective spells. He cuts an almost spectral figure, reminiscent of a famine victim with translucent, pus-colored skin that displays "speckles of blue" beneath. His gauntness hints at extreme old age or advanced disease, lending an eerie quality to his presence. Murgen, one of the Black Company’s soldiers, describes him as having a face "skull-like, with waxy, pallid features" and washed-out gray eyes tinged with a pinkish hue. Despite his sickly appearance, Longshadow is both fearsome and formidable, wielding immense power over the shadows that are simultaneously his weapon and his constant source of fear.
What Are Longshadow’s Personality and Motivations?
Longshadow is universally despised, even by those who serve him. He is prone to fits of rage, extreme paranoia, and an obsessive control over every aspect of his operations. His relationship with his allies—other Shadowmasters such as Stormshadow, Moonshadow, and Shadowspinner—is tumultuous at best, characterized by frequent outbursts and mutual distrust. His paranoia is intensified by his reliance on shadow magic, specifically tied to the Shadowgate, a mystical barrier that both empowers him and serves as a constant threat, as shadows have a tendency to turn on those who wield them.
His relationship with his chief general, Mogaba, a highly disciplined and stoic warrior, highlights his detrimental micromanagement. Despite Mogaba’s strategic prowess, Longshadow’s interference often hampers military efforts, showcasing his inability to relinquish control. His self-centered desire for power manifests in his treatment of all who come near him—he tolerates no dissent, trusts few, and respects none.
What Role Does Longshadow Play in Conquering Hsien?
Before entering the homeworld, Longshadow and his apprentice Shadowspinner originally hail from another world, crossing the glittering plain—a mysterious land linking sixteen worlds. They arrive in Hsien, a world unfamiliar to them, and proceed to subjugate its population using dark magic. Under their reign, the people of Hsien suffer immensely from the oppressive rule and horrifying abuse inflicted by shadows. This shadow-based tyranny leads the inhabitants to call themselves the Children of the Dead, haunted by the presence of their tormentors.
The particular cruelty of Longshadow and Shadowspinner’s rule leads to a rebellion. After years of oppression, the people of Hsien devise a way to escape through a Shadowgate, fleeing to the homeworld. In response, Longshadow and Shadowspinner follow, driven by a relentless pursuit to reclaim their power.
How Did Longshadow Establish the Shadowlands?
Upon entering the homeworld, Longshadow allies with Shadowspinner, Stormshadow, and Moonshadow, forming the core of the Shadowmasters. Together, they create the Shadowlands, a dark and dangerous territory dominated by shadow-based sorcery. Establishing the fortress Overlook as his primary base of power, Longshadow embarks on a campaign of conquest and terror, taking over the city of Kiaulune (renamed Shadowcatch under his rule) and launching his aspirations of controlling the entire world. This ambition leads to the expansion of the Shadowlands, transforming once-peaceful territories into regions of darkness and fear.
His allies, however, prove unreliable. Constant feuds and rivalry among the Shadowmasters destabilize their rule. Longshadow’s own obsessive nature adds to the chaos, and he often focuses more on guarding his secrets and securing his power than on cohesive governance. Their ambitions inevitably put them on a collision course with Taglios, where the Black Company eventually allies with the local rulers to repel the Shadowmasters' incursions.
What Happens in Shadow Games?
In Shadow Games, Longshadow’s obsession with control grows. While his allies engage in battle, Longshadow stays secluded in Overlook, tirelessly watching the Shadowgate. His primary contribution to the conflict is his use of shadowweavers, spies and agents who use shadows to gather intelligence on the Black Company. He also attempts to kidnap Lady, a powerful sorceress and one of the Black Company's leaders, though he fails to capture her.
During the Battle of Ghoja Ford, Longshadow's allies suffer severe losses against the Black Company and their Taglian allies. While Longshadow himself remains untouched, his dominance over the other Shadowmasters begins to wane as one by one, they fall, leaving him increasingly isolated.
How Does Longshadow Influence Events in Dreams of Steel?
In Dreams of Steel, Longshadow reaches out to The Howler, an enigmatic and immensely powerful sorcerer, for assistance. Together, they develop a flying carpet to transport spies and shadowweavers into Taglios. Although the Black Company manages to root out many of these infiltrators, Longshadow’s persistence proves a formidable challenge. He even attempts to seize control of Smoke, a Taglian wizard, to gain access to sensitive information.
Meanwhile, Longshadow's allies continue to diminish. He forms a shaky alliance with Narayan Singh, leader of the Stranglers, and also brings in Mogaba, a former member of the Black Company, as his primary general. The alliance strengthens his position, but his habitual distrust and micromanagement hinder Mogaba’s military effectiveness.
Why Does Longshadow Fear the Shadows?
Longshadow’s connection to shadow magic is both his power and his curse. In an incident early in his life, he had to use his true name to help seal a Shadowgate, binding his fate to its existence. If Longshadow dies, the Shadowgate would shatter, unleashing an uncontrollable surge of shadows upon the world. This knowledge keeps his apprentices from turning on him, but it also instills in Longshadow a profound fear—should he lose control, the shadows he has manipulated could very well become his doom.
What Is Longshadow’s Fate?
After a series of military defeats, the Black Company ultimately lays siege to Overlook, where Longshadow is captured. To prevent him from casting spells, the Company sews his mouth shut and binds his fingers. In his powerless state, he is transported through the Shadowgate—his deepest fear realized. Longshadow is eventually placed in stasis along with other prisoners of the Black Company, a state of suspended existence where he will remain indefinitely, haunted by his failure and the shadows he once commanded.
Longshadow's Raw Power
Longshadow’s raw power lies almost exclusively in his advanced mastery of shadow-based sorcery, which he wields with devastating effect. He lacks physical strength, which limits his ability to engage in direct combat, and his combative capabilities are restricted to what he can summon through shadows. This unique specialization makes him a powerful figure, though one who is at his best when working from a protected position or using shadows to attack from a distance. Despite these limitations, his magical skill alone justifies a rating of 8.0, placing him well above average yet not on par with characters who possess both immense magical and physical abilities.
Strength
In terms of Strength, Longshadow exhibits little in the way of physical might. His skeletal and sickly appearance, combined with frailty and tremors, underscore his lack of physical power. Described as “gaunt,” he appears more famine-stricken than muscular, relying entirely on his magic to enforce his will rather than physical prowess. This absence of physical strength holds back his raw power score as he lacks the muscle and brute force that would otherwise contribute to his combat abilities.
Magical Ability
Longshadow’s Magical Ability is the cornerstone of his power. He is a master of shadow magic, able to command and manipulate shadows with such precision and potency that he reshapes the landscape around him, as seen in the creation of the Shadowlands. His shadows are more than mere darkness; they are creatures that can inflict terror and death. Longshadow’s command over his shadows allows him to spy on, track, and destroy his enemies remotely, a skill he uses to great effect against the Black Company. His reliance on protective enchantments—woven into his garments and dwelling—demonstrates not only his knowledge but his strategic use of magical defenses. His manipulation of shadows is so powerful that he has, in moments of desperation, used his true name to bind a Shadowgate, securing his life force to a structure of immense magical complexity.
Combat Prowess
Despite his remarkable magical talent, Longshadow lacks Combat Prowess in a traditional sense. His physical frailty and lack of conventional fighting skills mean he would fare poorly in close-quarters combat. Instead, he is most dangerous when he can maintain a distance, as his shadows serve as his primary offensive and defensive tools. When confronted directly, Longshadow becomes vulnerable; in such situations, his tactical solution is retreat or reliance on magical wards rather than personal combat.
Longshadow's Tactical Ability
Longshadow’s tactical abilities are commendable, particularly his skill in utilizing magic and alliances to create lasting strategic advantages. His insight into battlefield preparation, resourceful use of shadow magic for reconnaissance, and development of a powerful arsenal make him a notable tactician. However, his tendency toward control, paranoia, and an often counterproductive level of micromanagement restricts his effectiveness as a supreme strategist. Rating at 6.5, Longshadow sits above average, with the intelligence and resources for complex tactics but significant limitations when faced with high-stakes, adaptive battle scenarios.
Strategic Mind
Longshadow’s Strategic Mind is evident in his foundational role in the Shadowmasters’ alliance, a coalition that successfully carved out territories and waged prolonged wars across vast regions. He has a particular aptitude for creating defensive strongholds, as demonstrated by his fortress, Overlook, built as both a base of operations and a refuge from the unpredictable shadows he both commands and fears. Overlook’s location and construction reflect Longshadow’s careful foresight, allowing him to monitor potential threats, like the Shadowgate, while protecting himself from outside forces.
However, Longshadow’s strategic thinking is weakened by his excessive control over every detail of his plans, especially when it involves his forces in the field. His consistent interference with his top general, Mogaba, often undercuts the efficiency of his armies and limits his ability to delegate. This tendency has led to notable defeats in scenarios where his strategic micro-management left his allies hampered, such as during the crucial Battle of Charandaprash, where Mogaba’s strategic options were severely limited by Longshadow’s restrictions.
Resourcefulness
Longshadow displays Resourcefulness in his adept use of his environment, assets, and personnel to maintain power. His mastery of shadow magic, paired with his connections to other powerful sorcerers like the Howler, allows him to leverage a unique combination of dark magic and skilled individuals. This resourcefulness is exemplified in his strategic alignment with various mercenaries and defectors, such as Mogaba, who bring specialized talents to his forces and compensate for his own physical vulnerabilities.
His use of shadows as spies across vast distances demonstrates a clever adaptation of his skills for intelligence gathering. He often sends shadowweavers and shadow creatures to monitor and harass his enemies, particularly the Black Company. This approach allowed him to remain aware of enemy movements without exposing himself. Nonetheless, Longshadow’s reliance on shadows also acts as a vulnerability, as the shadows’ nature often limits their effectiveness against well-prepared opponents, particularly those armed with fire-based weapons like the Black Company’s projectors.
Resource Arsenal
In terms of his Resource Arsenal, Longshadow has cultivated a substantial and unique array of assets. From his alliances with sorcerers such as the Howler to his shadow magic and constructed fortress of Overlook, he uses every available resource to extend his influence across territories. His alliance with Narayan Singh and the Stranglers further bolsters his forces with a fanatical group, albeit one whose loyalty remains conditional on their own dark religious aims.
Despite this array of resources, Longshadow’s paranoia weakens his ability to utilize them effectively. His obsessive fear of betrayal and death at the hands of his own allies or apprentices leads him to limit the power he grants them. This was notably evident in his strained relationship with other Shadowmasters, where mistrust caused internal strife and divided focus. Such fear-induced restraint often diminishes his ability to create cohesive, long-term alliances.
Longshadow's Influence
Longshadow’s influence across the Shadowlands and beyond is ultimately marked by an absence of genuine loyalty and admiration, limiting his ability to unify allies under his command effectively. His reliance on coercion and his inability to foster loyalty or admiration means that his rule is tenuous and often undermined by those closest to him. With a rating of 5.5, Longshadow’s influence is defined by tenuous control, fear-based respect, and a lack of long-lasting impact on his followers, positioning him as a ruler whose power remains significant but isolated and prone to internal fractures.
Persuasion
Longshadow’s Persuasion relies more on his reputation and ability to instill fear than on any genuine charisma or diplomatic skill. Those who serve under him do so out of necessity rather than genuine loyalty or respect. While he occasionally succeeds in bending others to his will, such as his manipulation of Mogaba, his chief general, his lack of a compelling presence means that his influence wanes as soon as direct threats or rewards are no longer imminent.
Longshadow’s attempts to win over or dominate individuals like his rival Shadowmasters, who include Shadowspinner, Moonshadow, and Stormshadow, reveal this deficiency in persuasion. His relationships with them were fraught with mistrust and rivalry, ultimately culminating in a breakdown of cooperation among the Shadowmasters, which weakened their alliance. This inability to maintain a united front against mutual enemies like the Black Company is a direct result of his lack of persuasive clout.
Reverence
While Reverence could stem from his raw magical abilities and the terror he instills, Longshadow rarely commands genuine awe or deep-seated respect from his followers. His subjects and even his allies see him more as a distant tyrant than as a revered leader. The fear he elicits, coupled with his sinister appearance and powerful shadows, does grant him a degree of control, but this seldom translates into loyalty or admiration. Those who serve under Longshadow—such as Mogaba and various shadowweavers—do so because of the tactical advantages he provides or simply out of a lack of better options, rather than out of any respect or reverence.
Even the Howler, a powerful ally, holds contempt rather than respect for Longshadow, choosing to cooperate primarily out of mutual benefit rather than genuine loyalty. His lack of reverence even among his closest allies becomes a significant weakness, leading to betrayals and frequent challenges to his authority.
Willpower
Longshadow’s Willpower serves as one of the stronger aspects of his influence. His resilience in the face of fear, particularly his own terror of the shadows he controls, demonstrates a steadfast commitment to his ambitions. Despite his paranoid disposition, he exhibits a strong mental resistance to the shadows’ inherent dangers and his enemies’ attempts to subvert his will. His sustained efforts in building and defending Overlook, as well as in enduring the inherent risks of shadow magic, underscore this tenacity.
Nonetheless, his paranoia and uncontrollable temper weaken his effectiveness in resisting manipulation or remaining entirely independent. His temperamental outbursts often cloud his judgment, and his relationships are frequently fraught with distrust, especially with subordinates like Mogaba. While he shows impressive resolve in maintaining control over the shadows, his mental fortitude falters under stress, leading to impulsive decisions.
Longshadow's Resilience
Longshadow’s resilience is marked by a strong reliance on magical fortifications and a strategic avoidance of direct combat, rather than inherent physical durability. His defenses and spells allow him to endure threats that would vanquish lesser sorcerers, particularly in magical and physical resilience. While he lacks the robust physical form that might offer further protection, he compensates through exceptional magical resistance and the ability to shield himself within fortified strongholds. His resilience rating of 7.0 reflects his formidable defensive prowess, though it is tempered by his physical frailties and dependence on static sorceries to maintain his defenses over time.
Physical Resistance
While Longshadow’s physical resistance is hindered by his gaunt, weakened physical state, he compensates with his strategic use of enchanted defenses. He cloaks himself in a flowing robe fortified with silver and gold threads woven with static sorceries, which act as a protective barrier against physical and magical attacks alike. These woven spells amplify his capacity to endure direct threats, though they do not fully substitute for his fragile physique.
Due to his condition, Longshadow rarely engages in direct combat; instead, he relies on his protective garb and layers of enchantments to ward off harm. His enchanted robes allow him to avoid direct physical confrontation while still being shielded from attacks. However, this approach has its limitations, particularly against more concentrated or sustained physical assaults.
Magical Resistance
Longshadow’s Magical Resistance is notably more substantial. As a master sorcerer and Shadowmaster, he possesses advanced abilities to counter or neutralize magical threats. His skills include profound knowledge of shadow magic, which he uses not only for offense but also to reinforce his defenses. The enchantments within his robes, combined with his ability to manipulate shadows to his advantage, provide him with a significant buffer against magical attacks. He has survived confrontations with formidable magic-wielding adversaries, including Soulcatcher and Lady, both of whom possess potent sorcery.
Moreover, Longshadow’s careful crafting of wards and defensive spells around his fortress, Overlook, further bolsters his resistance to magical intrusions. His reliance on powerful spells and defensive layers exemplifies his acute awareness of magical threats and his determination to preemptively counteract them.
Longevity
Longshadow’s Longevity as a sorcerer in a high-stakes, hostile world is a testament to his staying power, both in terms of survival and influence. He maintains control over his territories and his subordinates for extended periods, despite the ongoing Shadowmaster wars and frequent assassination attempts. His longevity also reflects his capacity to survive in environments fraught with constant peril, particularly from shadows he himself summoned and bound. His resilience in this regard is bolstered by his knowledge of the Glittering Plain, which allows him to avoid lethal confrontations by leveraging shadow-based defenses.
Additionally, Longshadow’s status as one of the few remaining Shadowmasters, long after his rivals have fallen, speaks to his resilience and adaptability. His repeated encounters with the Black Company, who relentlessly target him, underscore his ability to survive where others have failed. Even in his eventual imprisonment by the Company, he endures for years, showcasing a stubborn vitality.
Longshadow's Versatility
Longshadow’s versatility is marked by a strong proficiency in utilizing his environment, allies, and shadow-based powers to adapt to various challenges. However, his versatility is somewhat limited by his specialization in shadow magic and his reliance on the shadows for both offense and defense, which confines his ability to operate effectively outside of his established strengths. His fortune and adaptability allow him to navigate the intricacies of the Shadowmaster wars and maintain power despite numerous challenges. With a Versatility rating of 6.5, Longshadow is adept but not exceptionally flexible in his skills and adaptability across various situations.
Adaptability
Longshadow shows a respectable level of Adaptability, as evidenced by his ability to survive and navigate complex, dangerous environments and alliances. One of his defining traits is his capacity to react and adjust to the shifting landscape of the Shadowmaster wars. For example, when he faced the persistent advances of the Black Company and their allies, he adapted by recruiting new, powerful allies such as Mogaba and the Howler, while modifying his tactics to counter their attacks.
Despite this, Longshadow’s reliance on shadow-based magic limits his adaptability to a degree. His powers are heavily intertwined with his unique relationship with the shadows from the Glittering Plain, which provides him immense power but also confines him to certain strategies and locations where shadows are most potent. Longshadow is less adept in scenarios that require a wide range of abilities or unconventional methods outside his magical specialty.
Luck
Longshadow’s Luck is somewhat favorable, as he consistently evades direct combat and navigates the dangerous politics of the Shadowmasters to remain alive and maintain power. Despite numerous attempts on his life from rivals and enemies, including from his own allies, Longshadow manages to evade assassination or capture for a considerable length of time, even surviving until he becomes the last Shadowmaster. His fortune in escaping combat situations and evading his adversaries without sustained injury or defeat suggests a degree of luck that aids his overall versatility.
However, his luck is not without its limits. Longshadow ultimately falls into the hands of the Black Company, and he becomes trapped in a miserable fate after losing control over his shadow-based powers and allies. Thus, while his Luck aids him in many instances, it falters at crucial points.
Shaved Knuckle in the Hole
Longshadow possesses a formidable “Shaved Knuckle in the Hole” in his ability to use the shadows as a hidden advantage and last resort. His mastery of shadows is his secret weapon, allowing him to unleash formidable supernatural entities that can decimate armies and defend his strongholds. The shadows provide him with an element of unpredictability that can catch even seasoned opponents off guard. For example, during the Battle of Lake Tanji, Longshadow unleashed millions of shadows in a devastating wave, an overwhelming assault that caught the Black Company off-guard, requiring them to rely on their fireball projectors to survive.
Longshadow’s connection to the shadows also gives him leverage over his subordinates and apprentices; they are aware that killing him would release uncontrollable shadows from the Shadowgate, thus protecting him against potential betrayal. This protective layer grants him a unique advantage that few others possess. His reliance on the shadows, however, also becomes a double-edged sword, as he is ultimately vulnerable to their wrath and must always maintain careful control.
Longshadow's Alignment
Longshadow embodies the principles of Lawful Evil in both his actions and his personality. He operates within a strict, self-imposed order, albeit one that revolves around his ambitions, paranoia, and desire for control. This alignment reflects his approach to governance, warfare, and interactions with others, particularly his subordinates and allies.
Longshadow's adherence to his own principles and rules is evident in the way he controls his faction and maintains order among his shadow-wielding sorcerers. Despite his cruelty, he enforces structure and imposes hierarchical discipline within the Shadowmasters. Longshadow does not indulge in chaos for its own sake; he seeks to wield his power effectively and impose his will strategically. His dedication to preserving his personal safety through careful management of his shadow-based powers also exemplifies his methodical approach, one that respects power as a means to an ordered, if oppressive, rule.
Longshadow's evil tendencies are apparent in his ruthless use of shadows to subjugate entire populations and to create an atmosphere of terror around him. His oppressive rule over the lands he conquers, his manipulative control over allies, and his willingness to use torture and psychological manipulation for personal gain underscore his alignment. Longshadow has little concern for the well-being of others, often seeing people as mere tools or obstacles in his path to power. His callous treatment of the Taglians, his alliances with morally dubious figures like Mogaba and the Howler, and his general disregard for life outside his ambitions align him strongly with evil.
As the leader of the Shadowmasters, Longshadow pursues an aggressive expansion of his territory through conquest and dark sorcery. His ties to shadow magic and his ability to command fearsome shadow entities place him among the most feared sorcerers in his world. The Shadowmasters' ultimate goal to dominate the entire Taglian region reflects Longshadow’s grandiose vision and belief in his right to impose his will over others. However, his paranoia and distrustful nature often interfere with his ability to form lasting alliances, leading to tension within his faction and occasional betrayals among his ranks.
Longshadow’s background as a member of a mysterious race originating from an alternate world connected by the Glittering Plain gives him unique strengths and motivations. His mastery of shadow magic, a power source drawn from the enigmatic Shadowgate, not only fortifies his rule but also binds him to an existence constantly plagued by paranoia and fear. His race's unknown origin and reliance on the shadows are both strengths and weaknesses, complicating his efforts to maintain control over his lands and ultimately his own fate.
Longshadow’s Lawful Evil alignment drives his methodical, ambitious, and ruthless approach to power. His alignment and motivations reflect a character who wields order and cruelty to expand his reach, with little to no regard for the suffering his rule brings to others. His leadership of the Shadowmasters cements his position as an antagonist whose ambitions and methods are as calculated as they are merciless. Overall Conclusion on Longshadow and Position Across Planes of Existence
Longshadow ranks at a 6.7, reflecting a position of considerable strength, versatility, and resilience, yet falling short of the highest echelons of power across fantasy universes. This rating places him solidly above average, especially when viewed in light of his significant magical prowess, strategic abilities, and dark influence over his territories. However, limitations in his physical resilience and his extreme paranoia prevent him from ascending to the top tier of power.
Longshadow’s mastery of shadow magic and the power drawn from the Shadowgate are remarkable. His proficiency with dark sorcery, allowing him to summon shadows that serve both as tools and weapons, is a unique strength that sets him apart from many other fantasy characters. However, his combat prowess is largely indirect; while he is powerful in a magical sense, he relies heavily on his shadow constructs and subordinates, such as the Howler and Mogaba, to fight on his behalf. This strategic yet indirect approach to combat reflects his strength but limits his ability to engage directly with highly formidable foes in other universes, thereby justifying a score of 6.7 rather than a higher rating.
Longshadow’s strategic mind is demonstrated through his careful management of alliances and subordinates. His ability to maintain control over the Shadowmasters and direct large-scale conquests in the Taglian territories speaks to his resourcefulness and tactical planning. However, his influence is hampered by his distrustful nature and the toxic alliances he forms. While he inspires fear, he rarely commands true loyalty, which limits his long-term power. Furthermore, his fixation on maintaining control over his shadows and his crippling paranoia introduce instability to his leadership. This paranoia, while allowing him to protect himself with myriad enchantments, reduces his capacity to inspire enduring devotion, thus capping his influence and keeping his power level just below that of universally dominant figures.
Longshadow’s resilience, while respectable in terms of magical defenses, falters due to his frail physical state. He has extensively fortified himself with protective spells, but his gaunt frame and ill health make him vulnerable outside of magical protection. His limited physical endurance leaves him reliant on his magic to survive, a dependency that could be exploited by characters with greater versatility and physical durability. Although his adaptability in situations involving shadows is strong, his broader versatility is limited compared to characters with more diverse skill sets or those who can seamlessly integrate both magical and physical prowess.
Longshadow’s strengths, particularly his mastery of shadows, dark influence, and capacity for large-scale magical domination, make him a compelling and fearsome force. Yet his reliance on shadow-based magic, limited direct combat ability, and significant physical vulnerability keep him just shy of true elite status. This assessment captures why a 6.7 rating, placing him in a position of solid power and influence without top-tier dominance, accurately reflects his capabilities across diverse fantasy settings.
